SALEM, Va. - The Randolph College men's track and field team turned in a strong showing at the Bast-Cregger Invitational hosted by Roanoke College on Saturday in Salem, Va., highlighted by multiple personal records and top finishes across the sprints, hurdles, jumps, and distance events.
Ja'Mar Smith led the WildCats with an impressive day in the 60-meter dash and hurdles. Smith qualified for the finals of the 60-meter dash after running 7.05 in the preliminaries and 7.04 in the semifinals before placing seventh overall in the finals with a time of 7.12. He also advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, recording a personal-best 8.62 in the prelims and finishing fifth overall in the finals with a time of 8.71.
Smith added a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.69 meters (21-11.5) and added a sixth-place finish in the triple jump, jumping 12.80 meters (42-00)
Johan Arends was the lone WildCat to compete in the 300 meters, in which he placed 10th overall with a time of 42.29. He also competed in the 60-meter hurdles and ran a time of 9.36, along with
Ethan Fisher in 9.23.
Several other WildCats recorded personal records in the sprint events.
Jeff Mendscole and
Jahlil Weekes each posted PRs in the 60-meter dash semifinals, with Mendscole clocking a 7.14 and Weekes running 7.23.
Savion Thomas,
Immanuel Williams,
Kyron Gault, and
Christian Humes also competed in sprint events throughout the meet.
In the quarter mile, Humes placed sixth overall in the 400 meters with a time of 52.18, while
Emir Jackson followed closely in seventh at 52.30.
Christopher Wills finished in the same event with a time of 54.53.
Jacob Johnson set a personal record in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:11.45, while
Aiden Bartulis recorded a time of 2:18.80. In the 1000 meters,
Edward Koroma posted a PR with a ninth-place finish in 2:44.80.
Randolph also saw strong performances in the 200-meter dash, led by E. Jackson, who placed ninth overall with a time of 23.46 seconds. Humes followed closely at 23.59, while Wills posted a personal record of 23.68.
Weekes added another PR with a time of 23.70, and Williams recorded a mark of 23.94. Mendscole rounded out the WildCats' competitors in the event with a time of 24.16.
Field events also saw strong performances for Randolph.
Jayden Watkins earned a runner-up finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.50 meters (14-09). In the long jump, Thomas placed sixth with a mark of 6.62 meters (21-08.75), while
Xavier Calloway posted a season-best jump of 6.15 meters (20-02.25).
Ashton Jackson finished with 6.13m (20-01.5), and Gault jumped a 5.77m (18-11.25).
In the triple jump, Carter jumped into fourth place with a 12.94-meter mark (42-05.50). Thomas followed in fifth place with a mark of 12.91 meters (42-04.25), and Calloway rounded out the group with a 12.16 meter jump (39-10.75).
Xavier White threw a season-best of 12.69 meters (41-07.75) and
Julio Alvarenga tossed a season-best of 11.04 meters (36-02.75). In the weight throw, White placed sixth overall with a season-best mark of 14.88 meters (48-10).
The WildCats also competed in the distance medley relay, as the team of Bartulis, Johnson, Huseni, and Koroma finished second overall with a time of 11:50.60.
The WildCats are back on the track on Feb. 6 when they travel to the Camel City Sprints in Winston-Salem, N.C.
