WINCHESTER, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team went on the road Saturday to face Shenandoah in an ODAC contest. It was close game at halftime but the host Hornets pulled away in the second half to defeat the WildCats 87-68.
SU started the game with a 7-0 lead on the WildCats but Randolph came back with a 10-4 run to close to within a point, 11-10, with under 15 minutes remaining in the period. Shenandoah would continue to add to its lead as it was ahead by as much as 10 points, 26-16, with under 10 minutes left in the half. Randolph rallied to overtake the Hornets as it led 34-32 following a layup by Chris Hayes (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River HS) with 5:03 on the clock. The score would be tied three more times until the Hornets pulled ahead 43-39 with 15 ticks left. Aveion Tucker's (Newport News, Va./Woodside HS) jump shot with two seconds remaining made it a one-possession contest, 43-41, at the break.
In the second half, the WildCats trailed by five points, 49-44, just over three minutes into the period. An 11-0 run by Randolph put it ahead 53-49 at 13:51. A 20-8 run by the Hornets, however, swung the lead back to Shenandoah as it now led 69-61 with 7:46 left to play. The 'Cats closed to within six points of tying at 6:52 but the Hornets closed out the game with an 18-5 run to secure the win.
Randolph shot 15-of-26 (57.7%) in the first half but cooled off in the second half as it made 8-of-32 (25%) of its shots. Shenandoah led in total rebounds 46-26.
Tucker scored 15 points to go with five assists and three rebounds. Khalil Caple (Suffolk, Va./Kings Fork HS) also had 15 points along with three rebounds, two steals, one block, and one assist. Viktor Parson (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) added 12 points.
The WildCats travel to Guilford on Wednesday. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
