Women’s Swimming Dominates Senior Day Meet

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph College women's swimming team hosted their final home meet of the season as they honored their seniors and swept the meet with wins. The WildCats defeated Greensboro 187-9 and Sweet Briar 189-38.

The 'Cats kicked off the meet with a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with a time 2:15.68 that consisted of Abby Ward, Alaura Arringdale, Kaitlyn Heckman, and Katie Scifres.

Katelyn Spuchesi was the lone swimmer in the 1650 yard free. However, she swam against the clock and posted a new school record of 19:58.62.

In the 200 yard freestyle, the team saw Rio Bucy get the win in 2:13.33 along with Scifres in second at 2:26.82 and Maddie Dyl in third at 2:29.24.

It was a top-2 finish for the WildCats in the 50 yard back with Spuchesi leading the charge in 31.44 and Taylor-Paige Kitts following in 37.84. Dyl followed that up with a first place performance in the 50 yard breaststroke.

Heckman and Kitts finished top-2 in the 100 yard butterfly in 1:14.57 and 1:35.85 respectively. Taylor Eshelman topped her opponents in the 50 yard free in 26.15. Ward was behind in 27.67 followed by Katya Zaitsev in fourth with 31.02.

Spuchesi, Bucy, and Zaitsev put in a top-three performance in the 100-yard freestyle coming at 58.36, 1:02.32, and 1:06.86. Heckman and Ward finished top-2 in the 100-yard back with Heckman at 1:12.68 and Ward at 1:16.81.

In the 100 yard breaststroke, Eshelman finished first in a time of 1:17.24 and Arringdale came in second in 1:22.49. It was all Randolph competitors in the 500 yard free with Zaitsev coming in first at 6:18.68, Scifres in 6:26.21, and Dyl in 6:34.28.

The 50 yard butterfly saw Heckman top the podium in 31.06 and Kitts in third at 40.72. The 100 yard IM had Randolph top-three finishers. Eshelman was first at 1:08.45, Ward in 1:14.28, and Bucy in 1:14.53.

The meet ended with the 200 yard free relay as Spuchesi, Bucy, Scifres, and Eshelman claimed first place in 1:56.16 and the B squad of Arringdale, Zaitsev, Kitts, and Dyl finished second in 2:12.64.

The WildCats will head to Randolph-Macon to close out the regular season on Jan. 24 at noon.
