Tennis ODAC Semifinals Preview

The Randolph men's and women's tennis teams will both play in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament this Saturday. The WildCats, seeded sixth for both men and women, will face second seeded Averett at Washington and Lee's tennis courts. The women's match will start at 11:00 am with the men scheduled to start at 4:00pm
 
How They Got Here:  The women defeated Sweet Briar 4-2 in their Quarterfinal match on Tuesday. The victory snaped a five-match winless streak to the Vixens and was also Randolph's first win in the ODAC Tournament since 2019. Randolph led 1-0 after doubles play concluded. Lena Kersten won her match at first singles as did Fleur Gaalman at second singles. Lize van Veen clinched the victory for the 'Cats with her win at third singles. The men knocked off Hampden-Sydney 4-2 on Wednesday for their first ever ODAC Tournament win. The WildCats went ahead 1-0 after doubles play ended. Jacob Martin won at second singles to secure the team's second point of the day. Vincenzo Marchese won at third singles with the match being clinched by Andreas Mulner with a three-set victory at first singles.

For the Averett men, they went 13-4 in the regular season and 8-1 in the ODAC. They defeated Guilford in the quarterfinals 4-0. The women were 14-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference. They also won 4-0 over the Quakers in their quarterfinal match.

The Series: Both women's teams will be meeting for the 15th time overall. Averett leads 8-6 and has won the last seven matches. For the men, it will be the 13th meeting and the Cougars lead 11-1.  

Last Time:  The two schools played each other a week ago in Danville. Averett won the men's match 7-0 and the women's match 6-1. For the women, Kersten won her first singles match against Siddhi Khandelwal 6-2, 6-3. Van Veen went to a super tiebreaker at second singles match with Ravaka Ramanatoanina. Van Veen took the first set 7-6 but Ramantoanina took the second set 6-0 and the tiebreaker 1-0 (10-6). Kersten and van Veen did win their first doubles match 7-5. The men had two singles matches go to super tiebreakers but lost the third set 1-0 (10-7) in both matches. Martin and Mulner won their first doubles match 6-4. Jason Duval and Ondra Pelda lost by one point 7-6

In the ODAC Tournament: This is the first matchup between the two schools in the ODAC Tournament. Since joining the ODAC two years ago, the Cougar men have advanced to the Championship match the last two seasons falling to W&L both times. The women have made the ODAC Tournament the last two years. They lost in the semifinals in 2023 and made the Championship last year dropping a 5-1 decision to the Generals.

The WildCats: Kersten posted a 9-1 record in ODAC play this season which led the WildCat women. In doubles play, Kersten and van Veen went undefeated at 9-0. Kersten played one conference match with Gaalman and is a combined 10-0 in doubles play. On the men's side, Mulner has gone 7-2 in conference matches between first and second singles. Marchese is 6-3. Martin and Mulner are 4-1 in ODAC play at first doubles. Duval and Carlos Haupt are 4-3 between second and third doubles.

The Cougars: On the women's side, Annika Kellerer is 13-3 and has won her last four matches playing primarily at sixth singles. She has played at every position except first singles and is 7-1 in ODAC play. Ramanantoanina is 11-5 and won her last four matches. She has gone 6-3 at first singles and 3-1 at second singles with a 6-1 record in conference play. In doubles, she has paired with Brenda Poulakidas to go 12-1 playing mostly at second singles and is undefeated in the conference. Elisa Batterman and Dilara Sultanova are 10-2 with an 8-1 record at third doubles.

For the men, Jaeden Mukkaladyil has a 17-4 overall singles record going 13-2 at second singles. Rafael Jodas is 7-1 in the ODAC while both Prabjeet Chandhok and Lucas Fiandra are 6-0 in conference play. Fiandra is 7-2 playing at sixth singles and Chandhok 9-3 at fourth singles. Sam Egui and Jodas have a 12-4 record overall in doubles and are 9-4 at second doubles. Florian Bert and Alex Donnelly have gone 9-4 overall and 7-4 at third doubles.
