HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Randolph College softball team battled hard but ultimately fell in both ends of a doubleheader to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon at Gehman Field.
In game one, the WildCats and Royals engaged in a wild, back-and-forth contest that stretched into extra innings. Randolph built a 5-2 lead by the fifth inning, highlighted by RBI hits from
Riley Shupe,
Rylee Humble,
Rachel Arce,
Addie Bowen, and
Zoe Watson. However, Eastern Mennonite responded with a big bottom half of the inning, pushing across four runs to surge ahead 6-5.
The Royals added two more in the sixth, but Randolph showed resilience in the seventh. Bowen's RBI double and a defensive miscue by EMU allowed the WildCats to tie the game 8-8 and force extras. In the top of the eighth,
Lacey Lucado's single — aided by an EMU error — gave Randolph a 9-8 lead. Yet Eastern Mennonite answered once again, plating two runs in the bottom of the frame to walk off with a 10-9 victory.
Humble led the WildCats offensively, going 4-for-5 with a double, triple, RBI, and three runs scored. Shupe added two hits, two runs, and an RBI. Randolph tallied 12 hits as a team.
Humble pitched 5.1 innings on six hits, eight runs, and three strikeouts.
Hailey Metzger came in and pitched 2 innings allowing two runs on two hits.
Game two saw Randolph strike first, scoring two runs in the opening inning thanks to a quick offensive burst. However, Eastern Mennonite responded with three runs in the second and pulled away with a five-run fourth inning to take control. The WildCats recorded eight hits but could not cash in enough offensively, falling 8-2.
Austyn Moran started for the WildCats and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
Aubree Bass closed out in 2.2 innings allowing two hits and no runs and two strikeouts.
Randolph finishes the regular season 8-30 overall, 7-15 in the ODAC.
