Box Score VIRIGNIA BEACH, Va.- The Randolph men's tennis team played Virginia Wesleyan in a key ODAC match on Saturday afternoon. The WildCats led 1-0 after doubles play but the host Marlins claimed four matches in singles competition to win the match 4-3.
Randolph drops to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in the ODAC.
The WildCats won two matches in the doubles portion of the match. Jacob Martin (Wadebridge Cornwall, Great Britain Callywith College) and Andreas Mulner (Brasnov, Romania) defeated the pair of Hovhannes Madanyan and Sebastien Muller 6-3 at first doubles. Carlos Haupt (Weston, Fla./FLVS) and Vincenzo Marchese won 6-4 over Rafael and Carlos Rullan at second doubles.
Mulner went to three sets in his first singles match against Tudor Vlad. Vlad held off Mulner 7-6 in the first set while Mulner won the next two sets 7-5 and 6-0. Martin needed three sets against Rafael Rullan at second singles. Martin won the first set 7-6 with Rullan winning the second set 6-4. Martin won the third set 6-2 to win the match.
Marchese also went to three sets at third singles against Francis Cabaddu. Marchese won the first set 6-4 but Cabaddu came back to win the next two sets 6-3 and 6-4 to take the match.
Haupt lost at fourth singles 6-1, 6-1 to Muller. Jason Duval (Kingston, Jamaica) fell to Mandanyan 6-3, 6-2 at fifth doubles. Lukas Rathgeb (Koln, Germany Apostelgymnasium) lost to Carlos Rullan 6-4, 6-2.
Randolph concludes the regular next Saturday at Averett. Match time is at 2:00 p.m.
