Men’s Basketball Drops Contest to Greensboro

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team faced Greensboro in a neutral game played at the University of Lynchburg's Wayne Proffitt Court on Tuesday afternoon. The Pride defeated the WildCats 64-55.

Both teams struggled in the opening minutes of the first half to get a basket. A layup by TJ James Jr. (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem HS) at 17:43 got the WildCats on the scoreboard. He would then later add a pair of free throws to put the 'Cats on top 3-0. The Pride took their first lead of the game at 15:48 following a three-pointer from Griffin Powell. Randolph took the lead back on a layup by Chris Hayes (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River HS). Greensboro then went on a 9-2 run to go ahead 14-8 and led by as much as eight points, 22-14, with under six minutes remaining in the period. The WildCats mounted a rally as they were able to tie the game at 25-25 with 1:15 on the clock. GC added a layup with 45 seconds left to take a 27-25 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the 'Cats tied the game three times in the first four minutes. At 31-31, Greensboro went on a 13-2 run to go ahead 44-33 with 10:50 remaining. Randolph then went on a 13-4 run to make it a one-possession game, 48-46, with 6:11 left to play. It was still a one-possession contest, 52-49, with 4:30 left but GC outscored Randolph 12-6 in the end to pull out the win.

Randolph shot 20-of-55 (36.4%) from the field. Greensboro went 20-of-54 (37%). The WildCats controlled the boards 42-32.

Stacy Byrd (Amelia Court House, Va./The Carmel School) scored 13 points and pulled down four rebounds for Randolph. Elijah Cox (Galax, Va./Carroll County) added nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Aveion Tucker (Newport News, Va./Woodside HS) finished with six points, six assists, and four rebounds.

The WildCats are idle until the New Year when they travel to William Peace on January 2. Game time from Raleigh will be at 3:00 p.m.
