VIRGINIA BEACH, VA.- The Randolph men's basketball team returned to the court following the Thanksgiving holiday as the WildCats faced Regent in non-conference action on Saturday. Randolph avenged an earlier loss to the Royals nearly two weeks ago as it won by the score of 89-63.
It was a close score in the early going of the first half as the WildCats led by one point 11-10 at 14:15. Randolph pushed ahead 17-11 at the 12:23 mark but Regent would come back to close to within a point at 20-19. Randolph's 13-0 run, aided by three-point baskets by Steven Burgess Jr. (Coeur d'Alene, ID/Coeur d'Alene HS), Trey Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run HS), and Elijah Cox (Galax, Va./Carroll County), put the WildCats up 33-19 with 7:19 showing on the game clock. Regent would eventually knock the Randolph lead down to seven points, 37-30, with exactly three minutes remaining in the half. The WildCats upped their advantage to 13 points, 43-30, with 2:08 showing on the clock and would go on to lead the Royals 45-34 at the break.
The WildCats started the second half on a 10-0 run to bust the game open and take a 55-34 lead at 15:29. Regent tried in vain to cut into the Randolph lead but the 'Cats led by as much as 26 points, 71-45, with 8:27 left to play in the contest. Randolph's lead did not drop below 22 points as it was firmly on control in the second half.
Randolph shot 35-of-70 (50%) from the field on the day and was 9-of-19 (47.4%) from behind the three-point arc. The WildCats dominated on the boards 35-23. The 'Cats led in points in the paint 50-26, second chance points 19-12, and in points off turnovers 20-6.
Miller had a double-double performance as he led the WildCats in points and rebounds with 14 and 12. Cox finished with 13 points and four rebounds. Burgess scored 10 points to go with four rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
Randolph returns to their home court to begin ODAC play as they take on cross-city rival Lynchburg on Wednesday. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
