Doubles Pair Scores Major Victories at ITA Regionals

Jacob Martin and Andreas Mulner had two big doubles wins on Friday

FREDERICKSBURG, VA.- The second day of competition at the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Mary Washington started with doubles play. Jacob Martin (Wadebridge Cornwall, Great Britain Callywith College) and Andreas Mulner (Brasnov, Romania) both picked up a pair of major wins.

Martin and Mulner started their morning with a match against Rithnik Machala and Keldibek Kozhoev from Mary Washington. The WildCat duo won 8-3 to move to the Round of 32 where they faced Barret Foster and Vincent Truong from Christopher Newport, who were seeded fifth in the tournament. The match went to a tiebreaker where Martin and Mulner won the tiebreak 7-5 to take the match 8-7. The pair advance to the Round of 16 Saturday morning where they will go up against Mukundth Boopathi and Joshua Kim from Johns Hopkins at 8:00 am.

In B1 doubles play, Vincenzo Marchese and Carlos Haupt (Weston, Fla./FLVS) defeated Petter Storberg and Jorge Urgal from Washington College 8-4. They then went on to win 8-5 over Jack Wexler and Owen Akers from Johns Hopkins. Haupt and Marchese will now advance to the semifinals against Aarush Kumar and Chaitanya Krishman from Haverford.

In B2 doubles, Jason Duval (Kingston, Jamaica) and Aksel Tinnes-Rimehaug (Oslo, Norway) were 8-3 winners over Shayaan Farhad and Joey Kelly from Moravian. They advanced to the semifinals where they defeated Sebastian Sierra and Daniel Gomes Riberiro 8-5. Duval and Tinnes-Rimehaug will play in the B2 finals tomorrow morning against Jonathon Fogle and Slade Funderburk from Hampden-Sydney.

In the singles portion, Martin lost in a super tiebreaker to Max-William Kanz from Stevens Tech 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-12). Marchese fell in his B2 singles match 6-4, 6-4 to Dhaivik Chenemilla from Stevens Tech. He will play Gunek Singh from Marymount tomorrow morning in the consolation quarterfinals.

Mulner defeated Urgal 8-5 in the Consolation Round of 16. He will play Justin Ilie from Washington and Lee at 12:05 on Saturday.

"Just an incredible day for the men's program all around," said head coach Sam Martinez. This tournament is the strongest we play all season and all six of the guys stepped up. To go 6-0 in doubles at ITAs is awesome. The team is buzzing for tomorrow."
