Women's Swimming Sweeps in Tri-Meet Home Opener

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph College swimming team hosted their season home opener on Saturday afternoon. The women's team hosted three opponents in William Peace, Gallaudet, and Hollins. The WildCats swept the meet with scores of 121 points over William Peace (42 points), 137 points over Hollins (40 points), and 142 points over Gallaudet (30 points).

The meet opened up with the 200 yard medley relay in which Randolph faced off against Hollins. Reaghan Quinn, Alaura Arringdale, Kaitlyn Heckman, and Rio Bucy got the win in 2:14.47.

The relay was followed by the 1650 yard free. Katya Zaitsev claimed first place in 21:48.58. Maddie Dyl finished third in 23:25.31. In the 200 yard free, the team was represented by three WildCats. It was a tight finish for Katelyn Spuchesi, as Spuchesi was .25 seconds behind first place to take second overall in 2:07.75. Bucy followed suit in third place with a time of 2:19.43. Rounding out the trio was Katie Scifres who came in fourth in 2:27.43.

For the 50 yard free, Taylor Eshelman was first overall in 26.50 seconds. Quinn came in third in 29.43, Dyl was sixth with a 32.43 and Taylor-Paige Kitts finished eighth with a 32.68. Spuchesi won first place in the 400 yard IM in 5:35.94.

The 100 yard fly saw Kaitlyn Heckman swim into second place with a time of 1:08.75. The 100 yard free was swept by the WildCats. Eshelman raced again as she finished in first with a time of 59.75, the only competitor to go under a minute at this meet. Arringdale claimed second in 1:05.87 and Zaitsev finished third in 1:08.43.

Heckman was the first-place winner in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing in 1:12.87. Quinn finished fourth with a time of 1:17.60 and Kitts finished seventh in 1:22.27. The 500 yard free Bucy and Scifres claimed top-2. Bucy was first in 6:08.77 and Scifres, second, in 6:34.63.

The 100 yard breaststroke saw Arringdale get second in 1:24.59 and Dyl, third, in 1:33.25. The final event of the day was the 200 yard free relay. The WildCats, Zaitsev, Scifres, Eshelman, and Spuchesi, won the event in 1:56.43, three seconds faster than their seed time of 1:59.57.

The WildCats will take about two weeks off before they return to the pool on Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. to face ODAC opponent, Virginia Wesleyan, and non-conference opponent, St. Mary's College of Maryland.
