Phillips-McLoyd Reaches 1,000 Points in Randolph Career; Men’s Hoops Falls to #8 Tigers

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team hosted #8 Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday evening at Giles Gymnasium. The WildCats had season-highs in overall and three-point shooting percentages but were outscored by the Tigers 56-43 in the second half as HS-C won by the score of 105-92.

With a  layup at 10:24 of the first half, Jordan Phillips-McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) went over 1,000 points for his Randolph career. He became the seventh player in the history of the WildCat program to score 1,000 points.

Back-to-back three-point baskets by Evan Wiehe (Cleveland, OH/Nordonia) to start the game gave Randolph an early 6-0 lead. The Tigers briefly went ahead 14-13 at the 13:45 mark. The WildCats went on a 13-0 run to jump out on top 26-14 with just under 12 minutes showing on the game clock. Hampden-Sydney cut into the Randolph advantage with a 20-7 run that gave the visitors at 34-33 lead with 5:50 remaining until halftime. A 16-7 WildCat run restored the lead back to Randolph at 49-41 with 2:22 showing on the clock.  An 8-0 Tiger run to end the half tied the game at 49-all at the break.

In the second half, the two teams exchanged leads to begin the period. Randolph's 12-0 run gave it an eight-point lead, 65-57, at 15:27. It was a 75-68 WildCat advantage at 11:56 when HS-C's 21-6 run swung the lead in it's favor 89-81 at 4:01. The WildCats closed to within seven points but were held without a field goal for nearly nine minutes of game time. Hampden-Sydney increased its lead to double digits with 2:32 left to play and its lead was never under 11 points.

The WildCats were 34-of-65 (52.3%) overall and 14-of-33 (42.4%) from behind the three-point arc which were the team's best to date. The Tigers went 34-of-68 (50%) from the floor and 8-of-24 (33.3%) in three-point attempts.

Phillips-McLoyd led the 'Cats with 19 points to go with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Viktor Parson (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) added 16 points. Timothy James Jr. (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem HS) and Elijah Cox (Galax, Va./Carroll County) both contributed 11 points each.

Randolph will host Regent in a non-conference game this Saturday. Game time from Giles Gymnasium will be at 4:00 p.m.
