LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's lacrosse team hosted Greensboro in the season-opening game for both teams on Wednesday evening at a rainy WildCat Stadium. The WildCats came back from a late third quarter deficit to defeat the Pride 10-7.
The WildCats got out in front 4-0 with 8:15 remaining in the second quarter. Greensboro answered with a 5-0 run to overtake Randolph and go up 5-4 with 9:44 left in the third period.
A yellow card called on Randolph put the WildCats down a player. That did not stop the offense from scoring as Emile Taduran (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon HS) scored at the 8:14 mark to tie the game at 5-5 and then Mackenzie Woodson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) with under eight minutes left in the quarter put the 'Cats head 6-5. Greensboro scored twice to regain the lead but Logan Warren (Chesterfield, Va./Steward School) scored with nine seconds left in the period to knot the game at 7-7.
Warren scored two goals 12 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter to up the Randolph lead to 9-7. With 9:37 left to play, Marcela Izquierdo-Poza (Madrid, Spain/IES Julio Verne) scored on a free position attempt to give the WildCats the 10-7 lead. The Randolph defense held the Pride to three shots in the final 5:22 of game time.
Warren finished with a career-high five goals on the night. Taduran and Woodson both scored twice. Poza had a three-point evening (1g, 2a). Woodson and Quinn Hooper (Smithfield, Va./Isle of Wight Academy) both caused three turnovers each. Hooper led in groundballs with six.
Mireya Norville (Sunrise, Fla./South Plantation HS) had seven stops in the cage for Randolph.
Both teams played 8v8 for the entire contest.
The WildCats' next game will be March 15 at home against Piedmont. Game time is at 4:30 p.m.
