Softball Takes Two Games at Grand Slam Classic

RALEIGH, N.C.- The Randolph softball team played a pair of games at the Grand Slam Classic hosted by William Peace on Saturday. The WildCats won both contests on the afternoon.

Randolph shutout Elmira College in the first game 8-0 in five innings. Starting pitcher Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) went all five innings for the WildCats. She held the Soaring Eagles to just one hit, walked six, and struck out five.

Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Her two hits give her 100 for her career. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) was also 2-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs. Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown) batted 1-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, and had two RBI. Taryn Campbell (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) was 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored, and a RBI.

In the second game of the day, the WildCats held off LaGrange College 5-4. Campbell's two-run single in the first inning got Randolph out to a 2-0 lead. The Panthers got a run on the board in the fourth inning. In the WildCat portion of the inning, Olesia Walch's (Raleigh, N.C./St. Thomas More Academy) RBI single put Randolph ahead 3-1. Irving's two-run single made it 5-1.

Randolph headed into the seventh with its four-run advantage. The Panthers rallied with two runs to get to within two. Starting pitcher Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) was relieved by Walch. Walch then surrendered a run to make it 5-4. With the tying run on third base, a fielder's choice got the runner out at home and then a fly out to left field ended the game.

Irving finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. McDermott stole a pair of bases.

Scruggs picked up the win as she pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits. She struck out three. Walch notched the save in 2/3 of an inning of work. She gave up one hit.

Randolph will face #25 Piedmont tomorrow followed by the host Pacers.
