LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team returned to its home field on Tuesday as the WildCats hosted Sweet Briar. The 'Cats shutout the Vixens in the first game 8-0 and won in extra innings in the second game 6-5.
In Game 1, Randolph led 1-0 in the second inning on a
Delaney Nuckols' (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) RBI single. The WildCats added four runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. Two more runs came across in the fifth inning with one coming on an
Olesia Walch (Raleigh, N.C./St. Thomas More) RBI single and an
Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) RBI single.
Jenna McDermott's (Townsend, Del./Middletown HS) RBI single in the sixth inning scored the run that ended the game due to the mercy rule.
Morris pitched her third shutout of the season for Randolph. She allowed just two hits and struck out a season-high seven batters in six innings.
Lexie Lama (Benson, N.C./West Johnson HS) was 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, and one run scored. Nuckols was 1-for-3 with a RBI. McDermott batted 1-for-3 with a run scored, a RBI, and a stolen base.
Michaela Williams (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox),
Dominque Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County), and Walch all had pinch-hit singles. Williams scored a run and stole a base. Walch also scored a run.
In the second game, Sweet Briar scored first in the first inning to lead 1-0. Randolph answered as
Mackenzie Eggers (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) reached on an error that allowed Irving to score to tie the game at 1-1. The Vixens took the lead back on a Victoria Tew RBI single in the third inning. The WildCats wrestled the lead away on
Kieran Wrighter's (Glen Allen, Va.) two-run single in the fourth inning.
The WildCats added to their lead with two more runs in the fifth inning. With one out in the top of the seventh inning, a three-run homerun by Kaylie Hudson tied the game up at 5-all. Randolph had runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning but
Charlie Taylor (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) flied out to send the game to the eighth.
In the eighth inning, Morris came in to relieve starting pitcher
Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox). With Tew placed on second base, a wild pitch moved her to third base. Morris was able to strike out the side to leave Tew stranded.
Taylor was placed on second in the Randolph portion of the inning. Wrighter's sac bunt moved Taylor to third. Williams reached on a fielder's choice and Taylor beat the tag at home plate to score the winning run.
St. John pitched seven innings in the circle for the WildCats. She allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out two. Morris got the win in one inning of work and tallied three strikeouts.
Irving hit 3-for-4, scored two runs, and stole a base. McDermott went 2-for-2 with a double and a stolen base. Wrighter hit 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Brooke Rolocut (King George, Va./King George) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Randolph hosts #1 Salisbury on Thursday. The doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
