BUENTA VISTA, Va.- The Randolph softball team traveled to Southern Virginia to face the Knights on Wednesday afternoon. The WildCats took the first game 5-3 while the Knights claimed the second game 9-0.
In the first inning of the first game,
Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) led off with a single and then moved to second on a
Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) groundout. Irving then stole third base.
Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) singled to score Irving and she later stole second base.
Jenna McDermott's (Townsend, Del./Middletown HS) single scored Lucado and then McDermott stole second. She scored as
Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) reached third on an error and Randolph was ahead 3-0.
The Knights got one run back in the second innings an a Krailyn Guymon solo home run. Southern Virginia tied it in the third inning on Krystal Kemp's two run homer.
Randolph took the lead in their portion of the sixth inning on McDermott's two run blast.
Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) allowed a walk and a single in the last two innings to secure the victory for the WildCats.
McDermott was 2-for-3 with a homerun, three RBI, and two runs scored. She stole a base. Irving and Nuckols were both 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) got the start in the circle. She pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits while walking two. Morris pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit. She walked two and struck out five.
In the second game, the WildCats were held to one hit by
Taryn Campbell (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) to lead off the second inning.
Randolph hosts Greensboro in its home opener next Wednesday March 1. Game 1 of the doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
