Men’s Basketball Falls to Mary Baldwin

LYNCHBURG, Va- The Randolph men's basketball team hosted Mary Baldwin in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Giles Gymnasium. The Fighting Squirrels had a double-digit lead in the second half that the WildCats were able to cut to single digits but ultimately fell short in the end as Mary Baldwin won by the score of 67-48.

The Fighting Squirrels jumped on the WildCats early in the first half as they led 10-2 less than three minutes into the period. It was a 14-7 contest at the 13:12 mark but the Fighting Squirrels went on a 11-0 run spanning nearly eight minutes of game time to expand their lead to 25-7 with 5:17 remaining in the half. Randolph struggled as it was held without a field goal for almost 13 and a half minutes of game time. MBU led 31-18 at the break.

In the second half, Randolph trailed by as many as 20 points, 45-25, with under 14 minutes remaining in the period. The WildCats cut their deficit all the way down to five points, 51-46, with 5:25 left to play, thanks to a big 21-6 run as MBU was held without a field goal for 6:47 of game time. That would be as close as the WIldCats would get as Mary Baldwin went on a 19-2 run that broke the game open in the end.

On the day, Randolph was 14-of-51 (27.5%) from the floor and 6-of-18 (33.35) from behind the three-point arc. The Fighting Squirrels were 21-of-64 (32.8%) overall and 6-of-22 (27.3%) in three-point attempts. MBU had the rebounding advantage 50-38.

Danny Bickey (Beckley, W.V./Woodrow Wilson) led the 'Cats with 12 points and added six rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Amari Gorham (Yorktown, Va./Yorktown) added nine points and five rebounds. Ryan Viruso (Davidson, N.C./Hough HS) also scored nine points and Evan Wiehe (Northfield, OH/Nordonia) added eight points.

Randolph hosts Southern Virginia next Saturday. Game time will be at 2:00 p.m.
