Shopbell Sets Record in Men’s Swimming Home Opener

Evan Shopbell set a Randolph record in the 1000 yard freestyle

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's swimming team hosted Greensboro and Gallaudet in a tri-meet on Saturday afternoon. The WildCats were winners on the day with scores of 191-43 over the Bison and 187-16 over the Pride.

In the men's 1000-yard freestyle, Evan Shopbell placed first with a time of 10:36.84 to set a new program record in the event. That topped the previous record of 10:50.63 that was set last season by Ben Hiss (Forest, Va.). Shopbell was also first in the 100 backstroke in just over a minute at 1:00.07. Ethan Mayfield (Evington, Va./Brookville) swam a time of 1:06.95, Aiden Tuck (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) 1:08.05, and Micah Brune 1:12.78.

Shopbell swam the 200 yard IM in 2:07.30. Sam Hey (Black Mountain, N.C.) was second in 2:17.50.

Hiss came in first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.96. He also had a first-place time of 1:00.47 in the 100-yard butterfly.

Dan Allee (Alexandria, Va./Jacksonville Lighthouse Charter School) was the first to touch the wall in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 29.85. Following him was Tuck (30.26), Solomon Lewis (Forest, Va./Brookville) (31.62) and Brune (32.59). Allee was also the winner of the 100-yard freestyle with a final time of 54.79. Bennett Goodman (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox HS) was right behind in a time of 56.22. Conner Fulcher posted a time of 1:14.45.

Hey had the fastest time in the 50 yard breaststroke as he came in first in 29.62. Ethan Mayfield (Evington, Va./Brookville) was second in a time of 31.27. Hey was also first in the 100 yard breaststroke as he swam a time of 1:03.97. Hiss was behind him in a time of 1:06.97.

Lewis was the fastest swimmer in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 6:18.45.

Jackson Hunt won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.96. He also touched the wall first in the 50-yard butterfly in a time of 25.85.

In the 200-yard medley relay, the squad of Lewis, Hey, Hunt, and Allee collectively swam a time of 1:49.23. In the last event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay consisting of Lewis, Goodman, Fulcher, and Shopbell swam in a time of 1:43.61.

Randolph travels to Virginia Wesleyan next Saturday. The meet will also feature St. Mary's College of Maryland. Start time is at 1:00 p.m.
