LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team hosted Shenandoah in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Giles Gymnasium. Randolph held a late lead in the second half but the Hornets pulled away with a 12-0 run as they won 84-75.
Danny Bickey's (Beckley, W.V./Woodrow Wilson) three to start the game 25 seconds in gave Randolph the early 3-0 edge. Both teams matched each other shot for shot as neither went on a sustained run. Shenandoah did have a five-point lead, 25-20, with 7:43 remaining in the period. Randolph countered with a 12-5 run that included back-to-back threes by Bickey to go ahead 32-30 with 3:39 showing on the clock. The Hornets answered with a 10-2 run to lead 40-34 with under a minute remaining. The WildCats trailed by two, 40-38, as a pair of free throws and a layup by Micah Crider (Bedford, Va./Liberty) closed the gap for Randolph.
In the second half, SU took a 44-40 lead just over two minutes into the period. The 'Cats grabbed the lead back as they went up 47-44. The lead changed hands three more times until the score was tied at 53-53 with 12:15 showing on the game clock.
SU pushed ahead 57-53 with 9:30 remaining in the game. The WildCats came back to knot it up at 62 with just over five and a half minutes left. Trailing 63-62, Bickey would be fouled going to the hoop and made the layup with 4:11 to play. His subsequent free throw put Randolph ahead 65-63. From there, Shenandoah's big run gave it a 75-65 advantage with 1:39 remaining. The WildCats could only get as close as seven points as the Hornets made nine free throws in the final minute.
Randolph was 27-of-58 (46.6%) from the floor and 7-of-14 (50%) in three-point attempts. Shenandoah went 25-of-47 (53.2%) overall and 11-of-23 from behind the three-point arc. The Hornets led in rebounds 35-27. The WildCats did outscore the Hornets 24-11 in points off turnovers and in the paint 34-24.
Bickey led all scorers with 28 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Jordan Phillips-McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) added 10 points. Cole Perry (Salisbury, N.C./Jesse Carson HS) contributed eight points, six rebounds, and four assists. Landon Wagoner (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle School) led with seven rebounds and chipped in six points. Crider and Hunter Verling (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) both scored eight points each.
Randolph makes the short trip across town on Wednesday to face Lynchburg. Game time from Turner Gymnasium is at 7:00 p.m.
