LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's tennis team began its fall season on Sunday as it hosted Salem College. The WildCats defeated the Spirits 8-1 giving first-year head coach Sam Martinez his first victory on the women's side.
The WildCats easily won in the doubles portion of the match. Valentina Santos (Valencia, Venezuela) and Sabrina Dickerson (Brookneal, Va.) were 8-0 winners at first doubles as were Jenna Fink (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst) and Cassidy Bell (Monroe, Va./Amherst County). Harper Whetzel (Grottoes, Va./Harrisonburg) and Gianna Cabrera (Portsmouth, Va.) won 8-1 in their second doubles match.
Santos was a 6-3, 6-0 winner facing Cadence Durham at first singles. Dickerson defeated Emily Griffins 6-3, 6-1 at second singles. Three matches went to a super tiebreaker. Whetzel held off Haley Gilley 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 at third singles. Fink outlasted Alana Bridges 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 at fourth singles. Cabrera dropped a close match against Harley Hedrick 2-6, 6-2, 10-12. Bell easily won her sixth singles match 6-0, 6-0 over Tiara Howard.
Randolph will host Washington and Lee in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match on Wednesday afternoon. Match start time is 4:00 p.m.
