EMORY, Va.- The Randolph softball team traveled west to Emory and Henry on Saturday afternoon. The Wasps, former ODAC rivals now in transition to Division II, took both games of the doubleheader winning by scores of 6-0 and 14-9.
The losses drop Randolph's overall record to 5-10. E&H improves to 15-10.
In the second game, an Allie Jarrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) RBI single in the first inning put the 'Cats ahead 1-0. The Wasps tied the game up with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Randolph took the lead in the third inning on a Diane Mahiai (Chesapeake, Va./Salem) RBI double. A home run by Emory and Henry's Lydia Taylor in the bottom portion of the inning tied the game once again.
In the fourth inning with one out, Kayla Love (League City, Texas/Tallwood) reached on a dropped fly ball by the Wasps first basemen. Paige Naples (Bedford, Va./Liberty HS) then doubled down the left field line to move Love to third base. Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) singled to center field to score Love. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) reached on a fielder's choice and an error allowed Naples to score. A sacrifice fly by Jarrett plated two runs and a throwing error allowed Nuckols and Hawkins to score as the WildCats took a 6-2 lead. Emory and Henry scored three times in their portion of the inning to close to 6-5.
In the WildCats' fifth inning. Chloe Persinger (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer) doubled home a run to increase the Randolph lead to 7-5. Two batters later, Naples smacked a two-run home run to left field as the 'Cats increased their lead to 9-5. E&H closed to within one run in the bottom of the fifth as Morgan Silvis hit a three-run homer to left to make the score 9-8. Two batters later, Grace Harper hit a double down the left field line to score a run and tie the game at 9-9. Two more runs scored before the inning ended as the home team took an 11-9 lead.
Randolph had runners on first and second in the sixth inning with one out but Persinger and Love both struck out to end the inning. The Wasps added to their lead as Harper hit a three-run homer to make the score 14-9.
Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) got the start in the circle and went three innings. She gave up four runs (two earned) on four hits walking two and striking out two. Danielle Shannon (Greenville, Va./Riverheads) pitched 1 1/3 innings and surrendered six runs (four earned) on four hits walking two and striking out one. Persinger pitched the final 1 2/3 innings giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits walking three.
Naples was a triple short of the cycle as she went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, homerun, two runs scored, and two RBI. Persinger was 2-for-4 with a double, one run scored, and one RBI. Nuckols batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored and she stole a base. Mahiai finished 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Jarrett was 1-for-3 with a two RBI. Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) hit 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
The WildCats were held to two hits in the first game with one coming from Nuckols and Jarrett. Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) started that game going three innings and giving up three runs on two hits and walking one. Shannon pitched three innings in relief surrendering three unearned runs on five hits and striking out three.
Randolph returns home to host #4 and currently undefeated Christopher Newport tomorrow afternoon. Game one of the doubleheader starts at 2:00 p.m.
