GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Randolph men's basketball team travelled to Guilford on Wednesday for a mid-week contest against the Quakers. GC would win by the score of 76-49.
Jordan Phillips-McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) scored the game's first basket 25 seconds into the first half to give Randolph the lead. An 8-2 run by Guilford gave the home team an 8-4 lead at 16:46. The WildCats would cut the Quaker lead to a single point at 8-7. Randolph still only trailed by one point, 17-16, with 6:42 remaining in the period. Guilford then used an 11-4 run for the remainder of the half to go up 28-20 at the break.
Hunter Verling's (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary HS) layup to begin the second half cut the WildCat deficit to six points. A 20-10 Guilford run increased their advantage to 16 points, 48-32, with 11:42 showing on the game clock. The 'Cats were able to chip its deficit to 12 points,48-36, with a little over 10 minutes left to play. The Quakers' 12-1 run however gave them a 60-37 lead with 6:09 remaining that was too much for the WildCats to overcome.
Randolph was 20-of-55 (36.4%) on the night while Guilford was 26-of-74 (35.1%). The Quakers controlled the glass 50-39.
Myron Williams (Fayetteville, N.C./Cape Fear) led the 'Cats with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. Phillips-McLoyd finished with seven points. Verling had a team-high seven rebounds.
Randolph returns home to host Roanoke on Saturday. Game time will be 4:30 p.m. after the women's game.
