SALEM, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team travelled to Salem to face host Roanoke on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons defeated the WildCats 79-51.
RC led 6-0 before the WildCats scored their first basket, a jumper by Danny Bickey (Beckley, W.V./Woodrow Wilson), at the 17:09 mark of the first half. The Maroons led 13-2 until back-to-back layups by Joseph Peters (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) cut the Roanoke lead to seven points, 13-6, with under 14 minutes on the clock. Randolph trailed 21-11 after a traditional three-point play by Bickey at 10:48. The Maroons led by as much as 18 points, 32-14, before heading into the locker room ahead 39-23.
Randolph made it a 42-28 game just over two minutes into the second half. The WildCats closed to within 15 points of the Maroons twice but Roanoke was just too much for the 'Cats as they led comfortably led for the rest of the half.
The WildCats shot 18-of-56 (32.1%) from the field and were 7-of-25 from behind the three-point arc. The Maroons were 32-of-67 (47.8%) overall and 5-of-22 (22.7%) in three-point attempts.
Bickey led the WildCats with 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Jordan Phillips-McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) scored 11 points to go with three rebounds and three assists. Peters had nine points, six rebounds, two steals, and one block. Seth Hildebrand (Evington, Va./Liberty Christian) added eight points.
The WIldCats will next host first place and current #1 in the nation Randolph-Macon on Tuesday night at Giles Gymnasium. Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
