Softball Swept by Ferrum

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Ferrum for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader. The Panthers won the first game 6-1 and the second game 10-0 in five innings.

In the first game, Ferrum scored a run in the second inning to lead 1-0. Randolph looked to get on board in the third inning. Dominque Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) led off with a single and Taylor Friess (Goode, Va./Liberty) followed with a single of her own. After Allie Jarrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) flied out, both runners would steal a base to move to second and third. Both would be stranded as Paige Naples (Bedford, Va./Liberty) lined out to third and Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) struck out to end the inning.

The WildCats had another scoring opportunity in the fourth inning. Kayla Love (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) led off with a single. Grace Waller (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) singled but Love was tagged out by the Panther second baseman. Kylie Stark's (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) single to left field moved Waller to second. Both would advance up one base on Railey Oetken's (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) sacrifice bunt but were left on as Irving's groundout ended the inning.

FC scored twice in the top of the fifth to lead 3-0. In the Randolph fifth, Friess led off with a double. After Jarrett walked, a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. Naples struck out. Chloe Persinger (Buena Vista, Va./Parry Mcclure) then pinch hit for Hawkins and singled to score Friess and make it a 3-1 contest.

FC added a pair of runs in the sixth inning to up its lead to 5-1. One more run came across in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring.

Braelyn Cooper (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) started in the circle for the 'Cats.  She went the distance as she surrendered six runs (five earned) on seven hits, walking two, and striking out four batters.

Friess was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and a stolen base. Waller batted 2-for-3. Irving had a hit and a stolen base.

The second game saw the Panthers jump on the WildCats early as four runs came across home plate. Ferrum added a run in the second inning, three runs in the third inning, and two runs in the fourth inning.

Friess was 3-for-3 with another double. Jarrett was 1-for-3. Persinger and Waller were both 1-for-2 at the plate.
