Women’s Tennis Defeated by Averett

Sarah Muller lost in a super tiebreak at fourth singles

LYNCHBURG, Va.- It was cold and blustery Saturday as the Randolph women's tennis team hosted Averett. The Cougars came out on top with a 9-0 win.

The score was not indicative of some close matches. In doubles play, Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and Ranita Opuku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brook Point) had a tight match against the pair of Inka Zeilstra and Louise Hovhammer. Zeilstra and Hofhammer won 8-6. Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No.8 School) and Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) fell 8-5 at first doubles to Fabienne Bachman and Eleanor Crane and Lauren Appel and Bailey Livingston went down 8-4 at third doubles to Nakia-Lee Goodall and Alejandra Garcia.

Two matches in singles went to a third set. For the second straight day, Schmitz went to a super tiebreak in her match with Hohammer at second singles. Schmitz dropped the first set 6-0 before rebounding to claim the second 6-3. The tiebreaker was close but Hovhammer edged defeated Schmitz 10-4.

Mueller battled it out with Zeilstra at fourth singles. Mueller won 6-2 before narrowly losing 6-4 in the second set. The third set tiebreak went to Zeilstra 10-8.

Jin fell to Bachman 6-3, 7-5 at first singles.

Randolph heads to Washington and Lee on Wednesday for conference play. Start time of the match is 3:00 p.m.
