SALEM, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team wrapped up its 2019-20 season on Saturday afternoon as they faced Roanoke. The Maroons won by the score of 75-67.
RC started off hot as it led 8-0 over Randolph. Just as quickly as the Maroons got up, the WildCats did the same as they went on a 10-0 run to go up 10-8 at 13:34. A 10-0 run by the Maroons put the home team ahead 18-10 at 9:44. The 'Cats closed to within three points, 20-17, at 7:45. Randolph then got to within two, 25-23, with 4:39 remaining in the half. Roanoke led by as much as seven but the 'Cats were able to make it a four-point game, 32-28, at the break.
Randolph's deficit remained in the single digits to begin the second half. Trailing 41-32 at 15:41, Randolph used a 12-4 run, with back-to-back threes by Brian Smith (Dumfries, Va./C.D. Hylton) and Tyren Hairston (Kernersville, N.C/East Forsyth High), to get to within one point of tying, 45-44, with under 13 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Maroons would not let the WildCats take their lead away as they built it up to nine points and then its biggest lead of the afternoon, 14 points, with 2:39 to play. The WildCats would not go down without a fight as they clawed at their deficit and used an 11-3 run to make it a two-possession game, 70-64, with 1:18 left on the clock. A 5-for-6 performance on the foul line was enough to keep Roanoke out in front as they went on to take the victory.
The WildCats were 26-of-69 overall from the floor and 9-of-22 from behind the three-point arc. Randolph committed just eight turnovers to Roanoke's 14. The WildCats outscored the Maroons in points off turnovers 19-8. Points in the paint were even at 26. The 'Cats also outscored the Maroons 14-2 on the fast break.
In his final game in a Randolph uniform, Smith scored 16 points while coming away with five assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Bryce Hall (Franklin County, Va./Carlisle School) also scored 16 points, which was a season-high. AJ Marshall (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) added 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. CJ Loving (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.
Justin Dula (Taylorsville, N.C./Alexander Central) finished with four rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. His three blocks gives him 40 for the season and sets a new Randolph single-season record.
The WildCats end their season with a final record of 7-18 overall and 3-13 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
