Marlins Use Buzzer-Beater Dunk to Defeat Men's Hoops

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan earned a tough ODAC win with a buzzer-beater win at the RAD Center.

Randolph (12-9, 6-6 ODAC) started out hot, taking a 17-6 edge through the first 10 minutes of the game, holding the league's top offense to just two baskets over the first 10:25 of the contest.

The WildCats grew their lead to as much as 19 with 2:48 to play in the frame.

Virginia Wesleyan (16-5, 9-3 ODAC) came back, however, cutting the lead to 10 with a 9-0 run to close the half.

After chipping away for most of the early portion of the frame, the Marlins finally drew level with 9:31 remaining in the game at 48-48.

The teams exchanged threes before senior Mike Ehilegbu (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) hit a layup to put Randolph back up.

A Marlin 5-0 spurt put the visitors back up, but a three-point play by sophomore Evan Horn (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) leveled the teams at 58-58 with 5:19 to play, but another 5-0 run left Randolph behind.

Three free throws got Randolph within a single possession, and, after a defensive stop, Randolph had a chance to tie or take the lead with 24.0 seconds left.

Ehilegbu took a running one-handed jumper from inside the paint to level the game with 17 to go.

Randolph needed a defensive stop at the end of the game, but Trent Batson dunked an offensive rebound at the horn to send the Marlins home happy.

Ehilegbu, who was honored before the game for his 1,000th career point, had the game high in points, 20. Sophomore Corey Brown (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham) added 13. The two had nine and eight rebounds, respectively.

DJ Woodmore had 17 of his 19 points in the second half for the Marlins.

Randolph heads on the road for two games before returning home to face Washington and Lee.
