Box Score FRONT ROYAL, VA – The Randolph College men's basketball team upped its record to 6-0 and in the process set the school mark for best start to a season in school history as the WildCats knocked off Christendom College 99-45 Monday afternoon in non-conference play from Crusaders Gymnasium.
The WildCats (6-0) surpassed the previous record of 5-0, which was set back in the 2009-10 season. Randolph saw everyone of its players score Monday, as the WildCats finished with the second-most points in a game in program history. The 99 points is eclipsed only by the 104 scored November 29, 2007 against Patrick Henry College.
The Crusaders (1-6) kept the game close over the first seven minutes, with the WildCats leading 14-12 after a Brian McCrum jumper. Randolph rattled off the game's next 22 points, including nailing four trifectas over the stretch to open up a 36-12 advantage. Randolph would take a 56-23 lead into intermission after Corey Brown (Williamsburg, VA/Walsingham) nailed a three just before the buzzer.
Things continued to work out well in the second half with the WildCats outscoring their hosts by 21 in the period to cruise to the victory. Senior guard Colton Hunt (Whittier, NC/Smoky Mountain) had not posted a double-double in his previous 84 games before Saturday, but has now registered two in his last two contests thanks to his 14-point, 10 rebound outing.
Brown ended his evening with 13 points on five-of-six shooting, nailing three of his four attempts from behind the three-point line. First-year Lucas Smith (Cloverdale, VA/Lord Botetourt) posted a career-high 13 point, making six-of-seven from the field, while fellow newcomer Jason Eddie (Charlotte, NC/Davidson Day School) posted 10 points, grabbed seven boards and dished out three helpers.
First-year forward Alex Conwell (Cary, NC/Green Hope) also posted a career-best of 11 points in 16 minutes, and Evan Horn (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) and Chris Battaglia (Smithfield, VA/Portsmouth) each registered eight points apiece. First-years DJ Langley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) and Zach Walton (Timberville, VA/Broadway) each handed out a game-high five helpers each.
Randolph fired 60.7 percent (37-61) from the floor on the game, making 12-of-22 from deep. The field percentage was the school's third-best, while the 12 three's tied for the second-most in program history. The 'Cats also upped their record to a perfect 6-0 over Christendom College.
Christendom got a game-high 17 points from Jeremy Minick, who also posted five boards, two steals and two assists. Tim McPhee had 10 points, and McCrum had eight points and a team-leading six rebounds. CC shot 29.4 percent from the floor on the contest, and was outrebounded by the WildCats 41-25.
Randolph returns to the Randolph Athletics and Dance (RAD) Center Wednesday for another non-conference outing, hosting Ferrum College at 7 p.m..
