At the Championships meet, Shopbell placed sixth in the 1650 freestyle to collect All-Conference honors. He then became the highest finisher for a male swimmer in the current coaches' tenure. His time of 16:36.97 broke the school record, and in breaking that record, he also broke the 1,000 freestyle record with a split time of 9:59.95 in his 1650 free finals swim.
