WildCats Drop Tough 3-2 ODAC Contest to Washington and Lee

Chaffins and Ambrose go for the block

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College volleyball team fell to visiting Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Washington and Lee, 3-2 (25-10, 15-25, 23-25, 25-22, 13-15), on Tuesday night in the RAD Center.

This marks the first time since 2014 that Randolph went to a five set match with Washington and Lee.

After taking the first set with a score of 25-10, the Generals won the second set, 25-15, to make it a 1-all match. The Generals kicked off the third set with a 9-3 lead, but after a brief timeout called by the WildCats, Randolph regrouped and capitalized on several Washington and Lee attack errors to level the score to 9-all. The Generals managed to pull away for a slight 14-12 edge but Randolph responded quickly to close the gap before jumping ahead, 15-14, off a block assist by Rebecca Lesnak (Blountville, Tenn./Sullivan Central) and Meghan Chaffins (Temperanceville, Va./Holly Grove Christian). The score remain tight, with Washington and Lee grabbing a slight 22-20 edge. The WildCats would even the score to 23-all before back-to-back kills by the Generals handed them the 25-23 set win.

Washington and Lee held a comfortable 14-8 lead over Randolph but the WildCats pulled out an 11-2 push to jump ahead, 19-17. The Generals managed to level the score to 20-all, but kills by Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) and Kennedy Moulton (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) placed Randolph ahead, 22-20, and forcing Washington and Lee to call a timeout. Coming out of the break, the Generals tied it at 22-all, but Randolph sent the game into a deciding set after capitalizing on a pair of Washington and Lee attack errors to win the set, 25-22.

Despite a 5-2 edge held by the Generals, the WildCats fought back to trim the deficit to 10-9. Washington and Lee would lead by no more than two points with Randolph closing the gap to 13-12 but it would not be enough as the Generals landed the final two points needed to clinch the 15-12 set win and the match victory.

Three Randolph players recorded double-doubles in the loss. Autumn Troxell (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) posted 18 kills and 19 digs while Ambrose finished the night with 12 kills and 10 assists and Brooks Gillerlain (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) dished out 22 assists to go along with 11 digs. Kennedy Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) collected a career-high 31 digs to lead the defense while Lesnak chipped in nine kills for the offense and Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) distributed 10 assists in the loss.

The WildCats fall to 9-17, 4-7 ODAC and close out their home schedule on Thursday, Oct. 25 when they host Mary Baldwin University at 7 p.m.
