LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College volleyball team found its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win of the season after downing Ferrum College in straight sets (25-22, 25-12, 25-14) on Friday night in the RAD Center.
The WildCats held a 4-1 edge in the beginning of the opening set but soon found their advantage trimmed down as the Panthers fired of a 7-2 rally to jump ahead, 8-6. Ferrum held a slim margin over Randolph for the next few points, eventually settling with a 10-8 edge, but were plagued by attack errors, which allowed the WildCats to pull ahead to a 12-10 lead. The teams would trade points throughout the rest of the set before settling with an 18-all score. However, a 4-0 push by Randolph gave the WildCats a 22-18 advantage, forcing the Panthers into a timeout. Coming out of the break, Ferrum trimmed the deficit to 23-22, but Randolph capitalized on several Ferrum attack errors to take the 25-22 set win.
A 6-3 advantage in the second set placed Randolph ahead on the scoreboard and the WildCats would never relinquish the lead. Despite closing the gap to 9-8, the Panthers were stopped in their tracks as the WildCats stormed ahead to a 16-8 margin. Ferrum fought hard to trim the deficit, getting as close as 19-12 but it would be a 6-0 run that would seal the set for Randolph.
Ferrum kept the score close in the final set, trailing Randolph by no more than three points (12-9). However, the WildCats capitalized on several Ferrum errors to extend their lead to 15-9, forcing the Panthers to call a timeout. Coming out of the break, Randolph could not be stopped as a 10-5 run, capped off by back-to-back kills from Autumn Troxell (Front Royal, Va./Warren County), clinched the set and the match win for the WildCats.
Troxell recorded a double-double 16 kills and 15 digs in the win with Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) delivering eight kills, to go along with 10 digs, while Meghan Chaffins (Temperanceville, Va./Holly Grove Christian) chipped in seven kills. Brooks Gillerlain (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) dished out a team-high 22 assists for Randolph while Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) sprinkled 10 assists. Defensively, Kennedy Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) collected 22 digs in the victory.
Randolph improves to 4-8, 1-1 ODAC and returns to action when it heads out on the road to face Southern Virginia University in a nonconference match-up on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
