LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College volleyball recorded 102 digs in a hard fought 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 25-27, 25-21) victory over visiting Ferrum College on Thursday evening in the RAD Center.

The WildCats stormed out to an 8-2 lead over the Panthers in the opening set and continued to hold a large margin until Ferrum was able to trim the deficit to 14-13. Still, Randolph was able to maintain its lead, pushing it to 20-16, before drilling five straight points to win the set.

The second frame saw the Panthers race ahead with a 5-1 lead but a 5-2 run by the WildCats, capped off by a kill from Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) brought the score to 7-6. Ferrum would be able to hold on to the lead for a little bit longer but was plagued by attack errors, which saw the WildCats jump ahead, 13-11. Randolph increased its advantage all the way to 22-17 before kills by Kennedy Moulton (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and Lauren Morgan (Bedford, Va./Liberty) handed the WildCats a 2-0 lead.

With a leveled score of 5-all in the beginning of the third set, Randolph grabbed the lead off of a 5-0 run but Ferrum was not far behind and soon the Panthers were able to slice the deficit to 15-all before landing a kill to jump ahead with the lead. The Panthers pushed their advantage to 20-18 but were soon caught as a 3-0 burst put Randolph back in the lead. The score would tie four more times before Ferrum delivered the set winning kill, making it a 2-1 game.

Although Ferrum held a 7-4 edge over Randolph in the final set, the WildCats dished out five consecutive points for a 10-7 advantage. The Panthers continued to trail by no more than three points, eventually leveling the score to 14-all but Randolph was quick to shake Ferrum off its tail with a 6-0 spurt, pushing their lead to 20-14. The Panthers fought hard to close the point gap but with one final kill by Shelby Bergum (Terrebonne, Ore./Redmond), the WildCats secured the match victory.

Several Randolph student-athletes concluded the game with double-figures. Bergum floored 12 kills and hit .579 (12-1-19) for the night while Webb posted a double-double 10 kills and 12 assist. Brooks Gillerlain (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) also recorded a double-double, dishing out 33 assists and 13 digs. Kennedy Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) posted a career-high 29 digs for the defense while Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) added 18 digs, Sam Verhaagen (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Christian) posted 15 digs and Autumn Troxell (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) chipped in 12 digs.

The WildCats are back in the RAC Center on Saturday, Oct. 7 when they host their Dig Pink tri-match with conference rival Emory & Henry College and Regent University. First match is set for 11 a.m.
