Randolph Hangs Tough, Falls to Roanoke in Four

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College volleyball team hosted only its second opponent of the year, with fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) team Roanoke College being the visitors.  The WildCats pushed the Maroons, but fell in four sets, 21-25, 15-25, 25-21, and 15-25.

Brooks Gillerlain began the first game serving, as she does for the 'Cats most times.  She pushed them out to a 6-0 lead, which included her first ace of the game.  Autumn Troxell had a kill, while Alex Mariona, Shelby Bergum, and Troxell combined for six block assists in the run.  The next three points went back and forth, before Troxell started off a three-point rally for a 10-2 lead.  Bergum also had an ace.  The Maroons responded and brought it within two, before Gillerlain assisted on an Olivia Pullin kill to stop their run.  The assist moved Gillerlain into sixth-overall in the history of the program.  Both sides continued trading points, as Rebecca Lesnak slammed home a ball to put the 'Cats up 18-15.  However, Roanoke used two different four-point bursts to take the narrow set.

Randolph jumped out to a similar lead in the second, pulling ahead 6-2.  Troxell posted three kills, while Bergum and Mariona recorded one.  But the visitors took over the set soon after, scoring 16 of the next 18 points.  The WildCats made a valiant effort late to comeback, which included a kill by Taylor Webb, but it would not be enough.

Despite being down 2-0, the 'Cats started the third in battling mode.  Both teams went back and forth early on with the set being tied at six after a Lesnak kill.  It started a run of seven of nine for the home side.  Roanoke, made a little comeback and eventually tied the score at 14-all, but it would not last long.  Randolph rattled off four in a row, with Mariona getting an ace, and then Bergum and Gillerlain combined for a block.  The ODAC rivals exchanged points for the remainder of the set, but anytime the Maroons looked to get close, the front hitters stepped up.  Troxell killed three passes, while Bergum and Mariona each had one, as the WildCats brought the score to 2-1.

Roanoke answered right back in the fourth set, taking a substantial lead.  The 'Cats responded and cut the deficit to six, thanks to two Kennedy Webb aces and a kill by Lesnak.  But the visitors came right back with one of their own.  One more run by the hosts was in store, with kills coming from Troxell, Bergum (one each) and Mariona (three) but it was not enough, as the visitors took the set and the match.

Troxell registered a double-double with 15 of both kills and digs, while Lesnak led the team with 16 digs.  Gillerlain posted 27 (30 total) additional assists to cement herself in sixth-place.  She added 11 digs for another double-double.

Kylah Blackmore posted a game-high 19 kills for the Maroons (9-2 overall, 2-1 ODAC).

Randolph (2-9, 0-2) returns to the road this week for another ODAC contest.  The 'Cats play Guilford College (5-6, 1-1) on Wednesday, with the match starting at 7 p.m.
