WildCats Set School Records at ODAC Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College women's track and field team secured several new school records at the 2019 Outdoor Track and Field Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships, held Friday-Saturday, April 19-20 at WildCat Stadium.

The quartet of Tiffanie Kelly (Henrico, Va./John Randolph Tucker), Jordan Sheets (Lewisville, N.C./Ronald W. Reagan), Jalil Penn (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame), and Taja Hunley (Dalzell, S.C./Thomas Sumter Academy) set a new 4x100 meter relay record with a time of 52.66 seconds before the foursome of Liz Beairsto (Bowie, Md./Bowie), Sheets, Meghan Chaffins (Temperanceville, Va./Holly Grove Christian) and Alexis VanWinkle closed out the competition with a new 4x400 meter relay time of 4:29.57.

In addition to running a leg on the school record setting 4x400 relay team, Chaffins achieved three new school records in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Chaffins ended up in a three-way tie for third place in the high jump event where she cleared a new school standard height of 1.57m before taking fifth in the long jump with a mark of 5.17m, which defeats her previous record of 4.95m set at the WildCat Invitational last Saturday. Chaffins also earned fifth place overall in the triple jump, where she turned in a mark of 10.60m for another school record. 

In the shot put event, Teliya Stevenson (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) had the best finish for Randolph, throwing a mark of 10.22m before earning seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 36.40m. Kayla Wilhelm (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) turned in the highest mark for Randolph in the discus and the javelin, earning marks of 31.15m and 25.22m, respectively while VanWinkle cleared a height of 3.01m in the pole vault to finish sixth overall. 

Randolph had solid performances on the track with Sheets posting a season best time of 1:01.70 in the 400 meter dash, good enough for sixth in the field, before clocking a time of 27.02 seconds in the 200 meter, placing eighth. Penn had the fastest 100 meter time for the WildCats, finishing in 13.62 seconds while Beairsto recorded the fastest 800 meter time for Randolph, crossing the finish line in 2:36.66. 

Ermela Wurgesa (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) posted a personal record time of 6:01.58 in the 1500 meter run while Erin Schriever (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) was the lone Randolph competitor in the 5,000 meter race, posting a time of 24:13.42.

The WildCats placed eighth out of nine teams with 29 points. The University of Lynchburg took the ODAC crown with 222 points while Bridgewater College earned the runner up spot with 146 points and Roanoke College took third with 127 points.
