LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College women's tennis team edged out Roanoke College, 5-4, on Wednesday afternoon at the Randolph Tennis Courts to book its ticket to the semifinal round of the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Tennis Tournament.
Similar to the teams' previous meeting in the regular season, the Maroons won two doubles matches for a 2-1 edge before the WildCats clinched four singles matches to secure the 5-4 win.
In singles action, Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) secured the first singles win for Randolph, earning a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 while Schmitz was the next to finish, winning her match at the No. 2 spot with a score of 6-3, 6-0. Jin defeated her opponent, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 while Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) clinched the win for Randolph at No. 4, defeating her counterpart, 6-3, 6-1.
Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) put up a strong fight at No. 3 singles but ultimately fell, 6-1, 7-5 while Kristyn Underwood (Afton, Va./Nelson County) dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision in the No. 6 spot.
Randolph improves to 12-7 and will face the winner of the Washington and Lee/Virginia Wesleyan match on Saturday, May 4 at the Everett Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University.
