Women’s Tennis Drops 7-2 Decision to Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's tennis team hosted cross-city rival Lynchburg on Tuesday afternoon. The Hornets took the match 7-2.

The loss snaps the WildCats' eight match winning streak. They fall to 10-6 overall and 8-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Lynchburg improves to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

The WildCats' lone win in doubles play came from Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) and Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) who defeated the pair of Christina Harris and Caroline Guill 8-4. Jin and Schmitz have won six straight doubles matches and improve to 8-1 as a duo. It was a close battle at second doubles as Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) and Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) were edged out by Ellen Druebbisch and Sarah Wyly 8-6.

Schmitz, the current ODAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, defeated Wyly at second singles 6-2, 6-3. Schmitz improves to 12-2 at the second spot and has won nine straight of her singles matches.

Two other matches stretched out to a third set. At fourth singles, Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) took the first set 6-4 against Emily Hoang but Hoang came back to claim the second set 6-4 and the third 6-1. Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) rallied against Lilli Altenburg. Altenburg won 6-1 in the first set but Opoku-Sarfo came back to take the second 6-4. The third set was tightly contested and saw Altenburg win 6-4.

Randolph travels to Ashland on Saturday to play Randolph-Macon. Match time will be at 1:00 p.m.
