LYNCHBURG, Va. – Despite losing two doubles matches, the Randolph College women's tennis team made a strong comeback to edge out Virginia Wesleyan University, 5-4, on its home court on Sunday afternoon.
Prior to the match, the WildCats honored their lone senior Jordon Kirkpatrick (Lutz, Fla./Sunlake) for her contributions to the team throughout her career.
Although the Marlins would start off singles play with a 2-1 edge, Jin defeated her counterpart at No. 1, 6-4, 6-2 while Schmitz won the No. 2 match, 7-5, 6-1 to lift the WildCats to a 3-2 advantage. The Marlins tied up the match as Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) fell at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3.
Despite falling 6-4 in her first set, Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) fought back in her second set at No. 4 singles to win 7-5, forcing the match into a third set, where the junior ultimately fell, 6-0.
Randolph would clinch the win as Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) took a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles and Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) earned a 6-1, 6-2 triumph in the No. 6 spot.
The WildCats extend their winning streak to eight, improving their record to 10-5, 8-1 ODAC and return to action on Tuesday, April 9 when they host the University of Lynchburg at 3 p.m.
