LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College women's tennis team kept its winning streak alive as the WildCats edged out Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Roanoke College, 5-4, on Thursday afternoon at the Randolph Tennis Courts.
The WildCats won two of three doubles matches. The tandem of Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) and Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) took down their counterparts, 8-5, in the No. 1 spot while Kristyn Underwood (Afton, Va./Nelson County) and Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) made a comeback at No. 3 doubles to grab an 8-4 win over their opponents.
In singles action, Jin defeated her opponent, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 1 spot while Schmitz delivered a 6-3, 6-3, blow to her counterpart in the No. 2 match. Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision in the No. 3 spot while Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) fell at No. 4, 4-6, 7-6, 0-1 (0-7), despite pushing the match to a tie-breaker set.
Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) clinched the match for the WildCats in the No. 5 spot, coming back to win her first set 6-4 before sweeping her opponent 6-0 in the second set while Opoku-Sarfo dropped her match at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1.
Randolph secures its seventh-straight win to improve to 9-5, 7-1 ODAC. The WildCats are back in action on Sunday, April 7 when they host Virginia Wesleyan University in a 2:30 p.m. ODAC match-up.
