SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Randolph College women's tennis team extends its winning streak to five as the WildCats swept Sweet Briar College, 9-0, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match-up on Friday afternoon.
The duo of Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) and Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) earned an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles while the tandem of Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) swept their counterparts in the No. 2 match, 8-0. The WildCats clinched doubles play as Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) and Jordon Kirkpatrick (Lutz, Fla./Sunlake) teamed up in the No. 3 spot where the pair took an 8-3 win.
Randolph went on to win all six singles matches to complete the sweep. Jin defeated her opponent at No. 1 singles with a score of 6-2, 6-1 while Schmitz cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2. Mata and Mueller also earned scores of 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively, while Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) added another 6-0, 6-0, victory for Randolph at No. 5 singles. Kristyn Underwood (Afton, Va./Nelson County) won her first set, 6-1, in the No. 6 spot before her opponent retired.
The WildCats improve to 7-5, 5-1 ODAC and are back on their home courts tomorrow when they host Guilford College at 1 p.m.
