EMORY, Va. – The Randolph College women's tennis team won two doubles matches and three singles matches to edge out host and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Emory & Henry College, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon.
The duo of Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) and Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles while the tandem of Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) pushed the No. 2 match to a tie-breaker, eventually securing the win with a score of 8-7 (7-3).
In singles action, Jin defeated her counterpart, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot while Schmitz earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2. Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) fought a hard battle at the No. 3 match but ultimately fell, 6-4, 7-5. Mueller clinched the win for the WildCats as she defeated her opponent, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot.
Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) pushed her No. 5 match to a tie-breaker but eventually fell, 6-1, 7-5 (7-5) while Kristyn Underwood (Afton, Va./Nelson County) dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 6.
Randolph improves to 6-5, 4-1 ODAC and return to action on Friday, March 29 when it travels to Sweet Briar College for a 3 p.m. match-up.
