Women’s Tennis Sweeps Hollins, 9-0

Savana Mata hits the ball

ROANOKE, Va. – The Randolph College women's tennis team earned a 9-0 win over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Hollins University on Friday afternoon.

The tandem of Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) and Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) took No. 1 doubles, 8-1, while the duo of Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) earned a tightly fought 8-6 battle at No. 2. The WildCats completed the sweep as Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Hayley Ashford (Providence Forge, Va./New Kent) defeated their opponents, 8-2, in the No. 3 match. 

In singles play, Jin secured a 6-0, 6-0, win at the No. 1 spot while Schmitz took down her counterpart, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2. Despite falling in the first set at the No. 3 spot, Mata ultimately took the win, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9), after winning the tie-breaker. Opoku-Sarfo earned a 6-0, 6-0, win in the No. 4 match while Kristyn Underwood(Afton, Va./Nelson County) took the No. 5 spot with a score of 6-1, 6-0. Jordon Kirkpatrick (Lutz, Fla./Sunlake) secured the sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6. 

Randolph improves to 4-5, 2-1 ODAC and is back home tomorrow when it hosts Bridgewater College at 1 p.m. at the Randolph Tennis Courts.
