HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Randolph College women's tennis team won two doubles matches and three singles matches to defeat Moravian College, 5-4, in the final day of its spring break trip in South Carolina.
The tandem of Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) and Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) earned an 8-1 win at the No. 1 spot while the pair of Jordon Kirkpatrick (Lutz, Fla./Sunlake) and Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) secured the second doubles win for Randolph, edging their opponents, 8-6, in the No. 3 match. Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) fought a tough battle in No. 2 doubles but ultimately fell 8-7 (4-7).
In singles action, Jin won the No. 1 match with a score of 6-2, 6-4 while Schmitz earned the victory at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2. Mata fell 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 3 spot while Appel dropped the No. 4 match, 6-2, 6-2. Opoku-Sarfo fell in the No. 5 spot with a score of 6-2, 6-4 while Kristyn Underwood (Afton, Va./Nelson) grabbed the final win for Randolph to secure the victory as the sophomore clinched the No. 6 match, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6).
The WildCats improve to 3-5 and are back in action on Friday, March 15 when they travel to Hollins University for a 2 p.m. conference match.
