FERRUM, Va. – The Randolph College women's tennis team earned its first win of the season as the WildCats defeated Ferrum College, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon.
The duo of Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) and Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) battled Morgan Scott and Alexandria Dixon in the No. 1 doubles match to eventually win, 8-4. Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) and Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) teamed up at No. 2 doubles to take down Autum Murray-Burns and Mallory Scott, 8-1. Randolph's only loss came in the No. 3 match where Jordon Kirkpatrick (Lutz, Fla./Sunlake) and Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) dropped a tough 8-6 decision to Jordan Thompson and Hailee Green.
In singles play, Jin defeated Scott, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 1 spot while Schmitz beat Dixon, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 match. Mata took down Murray-Burns, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 while Appel defeated Mallory Scott, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 match. Opoku-Sarfo won in the No. 5 spot, beating Thompson, 6-0, 6-2, while Kirkpatrick's No. 6 match was pushed to a tie-breaker where she defeated Green, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
The WildCats improve to 1-3 on the season and return to action on Friday, March 1 when they host St. Mary's College (Md.) at the Randolph Tennis Courts at 1 p.m.
