LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College women's tennis team fell to visiting Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Washington and Lee University, 9-0, in its first match of the 2019 season.
The Generals swept the WildCats in doubles play as the duo of Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) and Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) fell to Valeria Marshall and Claire Lacksen, 8-2, at the No. 1 spot while the tandem of Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) and Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) dropped an 8-0 decision to Anna Kreynin and Georgia Wright at No. 2 doubles and Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Jordon Kirkpatrick (Lutz, Fla./Sunlake) fell, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles to Mary Hampton McNeal and Madison Hutchins.
Although Washington and Lee would sweep all six singles matches, the WildCats did not make it an easy victory. Jin fell to Wright, 6-4, 6-4 in a hard contested No. 1 singles match while Schmitz dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Kauffman at No. 2. Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) had a solid showing for Randolph at No. 3 singles but ultimately fell, 6-3, 6-0, to McNeal.
Appel fell in the No. 4 spot, 6-0, 6-0, to Gabby Moore while Mueller was forced to retire in the No. 5 spot due to an injury after falling in the first set, 6-1. The Generals completed the sweep in singles as Opoku-Sarfo fell in the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-0 to Hutchins.
Randolph drops to 0-3, 0-1 ODAC and will move on to play Pfeiffer University on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m.
