LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College tennis team hosted The University of Lynchburg, Pfeiffer University and Sweet Briar College in its WildCat Fall Invitational on Saturday at the Randolph Tennis Courts.
The tournament had six singles flights and three doubles flights. Kristyn Underwood (Afton, Va./Nelson County) won flight six singles by retirement of Reagan Coon from Lynchburg. Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) defeated Sweet Briar's Emily Wandling, 7-6 (10-8), 2-6, 1-0 (11-9) in the flight one semifinal round before falling to Christina Harris of Lynchburg, 6-2, 6-1 in the final.
Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) also won her semifinal round, sweeping Lexi Culley of Sweet Briar, 6-0, 6-0, but would fall to Pfeiffer's Sydney Gray, 6-4, 2-6, (10-6) in the flight three final. Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) earned a 6-1, 6-1 flight four semifinal win over Julia Bell of Sweet Briar before falling to Lynchburg's Ellen Druebbisch in the final round with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
Randolph earned three consolation wins over Sweet Briar opponents as Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) defeated Madeleine Young, 6-1, 6-0 in flight two, Savana Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos) swept Ruth Lechner, 6-0, 6-0 in flight five and Jordon Kirkpatrick (Lutz, Fla./Sunlake) beat Emily Wrenn, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 in flight six.
In doubles action, Appel and Mata teamed up in flight two doubles to win their semifinal round over Lynchburg's Emily Hoang and Alissa Anderson, 8-3, before defeating Gray and Darby Sherrill from Pfeiffer, 8-5, in the final. Underwood and Hayley Ashford (Providence Forge, Va./New Kent) took home a consolation win in flight three, defeating Lechner and Wrenn from Sweet Briar, 8-1.
The WildCats next compete at the ITA Regional, hosted by Mary Washington University from Friday-Sunday, Sept. 21-23.
