Each week, the Randolph College athletics department showcases a question and answer with our WildCat of the Week. This week is a junior from the women's tennis team Shelby Lutz.
Lutz came up big for the WildCats last week in the team's ODAC quarterfinal match with Bridgewater last Tuesday. With the match tied at 4-4, Lutz was the deciding point. She defeated her opponent 7-5, 6-3 to give Randolph a 5-4 victory.
How did it feel to win the deciding match against Bridgewater? Was it nerve-wracking with your teammates watching you or was it encouraging?
Near the end of the match, I started looking around and realized nobody else is playing. That's when I knew, I need to win this thing. Seeing my teammates and coaches cheering for me from the sidelines was really encouraging because it got to the point where I was playing for them and wanted to win for them.
You are a three-sport athlete with soccer, swimming, and tennis. Do you have a favorite sport or do like them all equally?
Honestly, I like all three equally. Each one has something different that makes it unique. In soccer, I'm a goalie, which is different from the other positions. I'm not trying to score goals, I'm trying to stop them. Swimming, it's racing which is always fun for me. Finally, tennis, it's really just all on you. If anything, each sport has its own pressure moment, which is what I love about playing them.
What do you like to do in your spare time? (when you have it)
If I'm not on the field, in a pool, or on the court, I'm probably in my room just watching a movie or TV because I'm always on the go and I just want to relax.
Do you have any plans for the summer?
Well right now it's preseason for soccer so working out all summer is at the top of my list. I'm also helping Coach Megginson with her tennis camps and I'm playing tennis and working over at jump trampoline park doing parties as well.
