BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Randolph College women's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 win against host Bridgewater College in the quarterfinal match of the 2018 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Tennis Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles held a 2-1 lead after doubles play with the tandem of Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) and Aubrey Hawn (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) winning Randolph's lone match, 8-1, at the No. 1 spot.
Jin would add another win for the WildCats, taking No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-0, while Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) and Hawn earned wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots with scores of 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively, to give Randolph a 4-2 advantage.
Bridgewater tied the match 4-all as Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) fell at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1 while Ranita Opoku-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 5. The winner of the match would ultimately come down to No. 6 singles as Shelby Lutz (Lynchburg, Va./Brookeville) managed to squeeze out a 7-5 first set score before clinching the victory for Randolph with a 6-3 second set triumph.
With the win, Randolph improves to 11-5 overall and will head out to Virginia Wesleyan University for its semifinal match-up with Washington and Lee University on Saturday, May 5. Start time is set for 8:30 a.m.
