LEXINGTON, Va. – The Randolph College women's tennis team opened the 2018 spring season at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Washington and Lee University on Tuesday afternoon where the WildCats fell to the host Generals, 9-0.
In doubles action, the duo of Keyu Jin (Kunming, China/No. 8 Middle School) and Aubrey Hawn (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) fell to their opponents, 8-2, in the first flight with the tandem of Ashley Schmitz (Keswick, Va./Homeschool) and Lauren Appel (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) also falling 8-3 in the second flight. Ranita Opuko-Sarfo (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Sarah Mueller (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) fell, 8-0, in flight three doubles.
In the first flight of singles play, Jin fell to Valerie Marshall, 6-2, 6-2, while Hawn dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Lily Horsely in flight two. Schmitz fought a hard first set against Claudia Kesala as the third flight match but ultimately fell, 6-3, 6-0. Appel played in the fourth flight slot and was defeated by Melinda Kauffman, 6-0, 6-0, while Mueller fell to Anna Kreynin, 6-2, 6-0 in the fifth flight. Rounding out the singles field was Opuko-Sarfo who was swept by Madison Hutchins, 6-0, 6-0.
The WildCats move to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the ODAC. Randolph will be back in action when it takes the court at home on Saturday, Feb. 22 against Averett University at 1 p.m.
