Second Half Burst Pushes #11 Lynchburg to Win over Randolph Women’s Soccer

LYNCHBURG, Va.- Randolph women's soccer hosted #11 Lynchburg in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at WildCat Stadium. The WildCats held the Hornets to one goal in the first half but Lynchburg added five in the second half to come away with a 6-0 victory.

The loss ends Randolph's winning streak at four and puts its record at 4-1. The Hornets improve to 7-1.

WildCat goalkeeper Zoe Waring (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) was stellar in the net as she turned away 11 Lynchburg shots in the first half to keep the 'Cats in the game. She would finish with 17 saves on the afternoon in 79:41 of game time.

The WildCats had a pair of corner kicks in the in the 3rd and 4th minutes, respectively, but could not get in position to get a shot on frame. Waring stopped four Lynchburg shots in three minutes. The Hornets' Caitlin Mertens was able to sneak one past Waring at 12:37 to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Lynchburg came close to its second goal of the contest at 31:42 but Hannah Old's shot glanced off of the crossbar.  Marisa Santacruce's (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) shot attempt at 41:13 bounced off the glove to Lynchburg keeper Delia LoSapio and out of play.

In the second half, Waring had two quick saves as she continued to deny to Hornets. Lynchburg was able to find the back of the net again with two goals a minute apart as it upped its lead to 3-0. Hannah Oversteet (Bedford, Va./Liberty) had a corner at 49:13 and followed with her own shot that was denied by LoSapio.

Shelby Lutz (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) came on in relief of Waring and played the last 10 minutes of the second half. She gave up one goal and had one save.

The WildCats will look to regroup as they host Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
