LYNCHBURG, Va.- It was a sunny but cold Wednesday afternoon at WildCat Stadium as the Randolph women's lacrosse team hosted Averett. The visiting Cougars used an 8-1 second half run to break free and defeat the WildCats 18-5.
In the first 10 minutes of the opening half, the two teams traded off goals as the score was tied 2-2 with 20:52 remaining to play in the first half. Averett scored three straight to go ahead 5-2 with 14:41 showing on the game clock. Randolph answered with a pair of goals to get to within one score of tying, 5-4, with under 10 minutes to go until the break. The Cougars would go on a 5-0 run to end the frame and lead 10-4 at halftime.
It was all Averett in the second half as its run extended with five straight scores. The WildCats got a goal from Teagan Stanley (Lusby, Md./Homeschool) at 9:27 to end the Cougar run.
Randolph goal scorers on the day were Stanley, Libby Exline (Sykesville, Md./La Plata), Sarah Perry (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County), Dana Cavallo (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills), and Nicole Dorton (Alexandria, Va./J.E.B. Stuart). Perry picked up four groundballs and Stanley three. Chrissy Shackleford (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) had eight saves in goal.
Averett was led by Alixis Roccia and Elizabeth Peasley, who both had seven goals each. Breanne Sawall stopped nine shots in the net.
Randolph hosts Sweet Briar this Tuesday. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
