MISENHEIMER, N.C.- The Randolph softball team traveled south to North Carolina for a non-conference doubleheader with Pfieffer on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons, who are currently in first place in the USA South standings, were a tough matchup for the WildCats as they took both games by the scores of 10-2 and 5-0.
The losses drop Randolph to 12-15-1 overall. Pfieffer improves to 27-3.
The Falcons jumped ahead 6-0 in the bottom of the first. The 'Cats would chip away at the Pfeiffer lead. A Nadia Tibbs (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) RBI single in the third made it 6-1 and a Rachel Lee (Clifton, Va./Centreville) run off a Falcon error cut the deficit to 6-2.
Pfeiffer scored once in the fifth inning to go up 7-2. Three runs came home in the sixth inning for the home team as the game ended due to the mercy rule.
Abbi Pannill (Prince George, Va./Prince George) pitched three innings and gave up six runs on four hits. She walked five and struck out two. Danielle Shannon (Greenville, Va./Riverheads) came in for the last 2.1 innings and surrendered four runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout.
In the second game, starting pitcher Lindsey Chaney (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) picked up the first two outs but then gave up a double and then a RBI single to give Pfeiffer a 1-0 lead. The Falcons' Vada Blue Sherrill led off the bottom of the third with a homerun to left field to put Pfieffer ahead 2-0.
Randolph threatened in the top of the fourth. Nuckols singled as did Lucado. Tibbs walked to load the bases. Hailey Thomas (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) reached on fielder's choice but Nuckols was tagged out at home. Shannon struck out and Brianna Harbison (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) grounded out to end the threat.
A solo homerun by Reece Davis made it 4-0 Pfeiffer in the bottom of the fourth. Two more runs came across in the fifth to end the scoring.
Chaney pitched all six innings for Randolph. She gave up five runs on eight hits, walked one, and stuck out four. Nuckols batted 2-for-3 in the second spot in the lineup for the WildCats and added another stolen base.
Randolph is back home next weekend with a big ODAC doubleheader against Emory and Henry. Game times are at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
